You have loved Les Miserables since we saw it on Broadway last winter. We heard from our family friend, Jackie Goldberg Jones, (Who is a stage director and big in the theatrical community) that the Chesterfield children's theater was putting on a production of Les Mis.
When we told you about it, your eyes lit up...and we asked you if you wanted to audition. You said yes.
When the audition happened I expected you to get nervous and staying your seat and tell me you didn't want to do it. That's what most six-year-olds would have done. But that's not what you did.
When they called your name, you didn't even look at me. You walked straight up to the front of the room and sang your audition flawlessly. There were a ton of other girls, all older than you , who were also trying out for the part of young Cosette. Many were seasoned actors.
I talked to you about how you will probably not get the part and how to accept disappointment but that we would still have a great time in the ensemble of the show. That's the great thing about Chesterfield children's theater is that everyone who wants to be in the play gets a part somewhere.
Your daddy and I sat there for a few minutes in bed, totally stunned. I was excited for you but also scared and worried! What if we tell you and you decide you don't want to do it? Or...may be worse ...what if you say you do want to do it , then get up there on that gigantic stage and change your mind at the last minute? Now... That could still happen. Even if it does ...... I am so proud of you.
We have had a few practices now and so far you absolutely love it. We are giving you singing lessons from Kaitlyn McCarter who is a Christian rock singer. You love her too. You love your fake stage parents that Thenardiers. You LOVE this world that is the stage.
We will see what happens, but like one of the directors said to me "we knew when we cast her that she was Six years old. We are a children's theater company and we know sixes can be unpredictable. But we think she is special".
The shows are dec 6-8 and we are practicing a lot. What a fun new adventure to wrap up the year.
